Vegar Family Heritage
The dream of making fine wine has been carried by generations of the Vegar family. Luka Lunjevich, great grandfather to Peter and Paul Vegar sailed from Croatia to New Zealand in 1902. Having survived this long, treacherous journey to his new homeland, Luka planted his vineyard in Kaitaia and became one of the pioneer winemakers in New Zealand in the early 1900s. He lived in this vineyard until the age of 83.
The Vega family established Matakana Estate in 1996, nearly a century after Luka’s voyage of discovery started, his great grandsons Peter and Paul Vegar, are realizing the family dream– aiming to make Matakana Estate wines amongst the finest in the country. The Vegar family has planted a row of vines at their home vineyard using cuttings from their grandfather’s vineyard, which was originally stocked with cuttings from Luka’s vineyard.
Winemaking & Viticultural Approach
Matakana was established for the sole purpose of crafting distinctly individual, high quality wines - wines that capture the natural characteristics of each grape variety, and reflect the unique character of their vineyard.
Matakana’s winemaking team is closely involved in all aspects of viticulture. Each vine is meticulously tended, cared for and harvested by hand; and then traditional winemaking practices are followed — those that respect and preserve the aromas and flavours, and bring out the intrinsic qualities of the individual grape varieties.
